Top 5 Running Accessories

by Kristin D. 24. October 2009 22:17

Running is uncomfortable, highly so.  Body parts jiggle, compress, collapse and chafe.  The heart pounds and thuds and sweat pours and the whole ordeal is an exercise in tolerating discomfort.

I like to be as comfortable as possible when tolerating discomfort, and over the years I've honed my running gear to a mandatory set.  I can't run without my marshmallow earbuds and my Lululemon tall pants and if my iPod is dead, it's a deal breaker.

Here are my top 5 absolute must haves for long runs in particular.

Great Ear Buds

The grey earbuds that come with the iPod don't even fit in the hole of my ear.  I can't walk with them in, let alone gallop.  As soon as I discovered the power of music to enhance my running stamina, I went off in search of an Awesomely Perfectly Fitting Set of earbuds.  The result was frustratingly elusive: I tried 4 different pairs and actually had one brand (Sony!) get stuck in the recesses of my ear, which was only slightly more pleasant than having a grasshopper stuck behind one's eyeball.

Finally, after scouring message boards and Twitter, and actually, mostly trial and error, I found these JVC marshmallow ear buds and I'm not sure if they just fit me perfectly or if they're superior in general, but these babies never fall out of my ears.  Also: they allow enough ambient noise that I can tell if a car is about to run me over or if a bear is crunching around in the woods behind me.  A handy feature.

A Kicking Run Mix

I am a woman of repetition, and I loathe change - and so I generally change my run mix four times a year.  I am totally loving my Fall 09 run mix, a blend of cheesy pop and introspective indie: all have good beats.

1. Stronger - Kanye West (yeah, he's a creeplor but this tune gets me going for whatever reason)

2. Viva la Vida - Coldplay

3. All This Time - Heartless Bastards

4. Time is Running Out - Muse

5. Don't Stop - Innerpartysystem

6. Rainy Monday - Shiny Toy Guns

7.  Supermassive Black Hole - Muse

8.Polynesia - Mother Mother

9. Girl and the Sea - Presets

10. Hey Rosetta! - Red Heart

I've got a few more but I want to hear yours for my Winter 09 mix!

Lululemon Yoga Pants.  Yes, they have to be Lululemon.

Lululemon yoga pants cost over $ 100.00.  And they're worth every penny.

I bought my first pair over 5 years ago, before I had my son, and I still have them and wear them, only a little worse for the wear (frayed at the bottom only).  These things lift your butt and make you feel like you look fit while you're getting more fit.  Plus, they breathe perfectly and are as comfortable in cool weather as they are in the searing heat.  Their shorts are the only shorts I'll wear.  Bonus for tall women: most Lululemon athletic wear comes in tall too, so you don't feel like you're wearing inappropriately cut capris while running.  This brand has a cult following for pretty good reason.

A supportive sports bra

Since I'm not well endowed, I wear a simple sports bra (Lululemon, I'm loyal) without a built in bra, but when I was pregnant I grew a chest for the first time in my life and I remember the pain of running in an inappropriate sports bra.  Most running stores will be able to recommend a fit suitable for your build, but running in a regular bra is kind of like swimming in your jeans.

Nike Plus

This thing has changed the way I run.  It tracks distance, calories, and pace - fairly accurately, too.  It tracks how far you've gone and your pace for each kilometer or mile run and it's a huge motivator.  I find it hard to run without this thing now, it feels like a waste when I run 10K and I don't have it to track and "prove" it.

So those are the top 5 must haves.  There are a lot of things I never run with - those little plastic bottles you see strapped to the waists of the runners who seem to gather in groups.  The baseball cap.  The nylon mesh shorts, god no.

Two things I'd love to know from you: what are some of the faves on your run list?  And is there anything else must-have that I've missed?

Hi,
I've been lurking here and there for a bit now, and thought I'd comment today because I've been looking for the perfect playlist! Thanks for your titles, I'm going to download some songs now.

Three of my tried and true are "Pary Hard" by Andrew WK, "Ruby SoHO" by Rancid, and "Jai Ho" By the Pussycatdolls(I know, I know)

Hey Petra, wicked.  I have more - I'll post the full list that runs 1.5 hours if anyone is looking for more tunes.  Embarssingly bad pop music is OK for running, I don't know why.  I have JT and Journey...and Alice Cooper on there for that matter.  If it makes you move, it's OK if it's atrocious. Another good Muse song with a workout-friendly beat is "Uprising" off of their new CD, "Resistance". Plus it's 5 minutes long!

Seconding "Party Hard" by Andrew WK!  That whole album is on my workout playlist.

Not sure how well this would work for running, but I absolutely adore Lululemon's Athletic Deep V Tank III (http://tinyurl.com/yh7ygga) for yoga, lifting weights, and cardio at the gym.  I don't have enough words to describe how awesome it is.

Lulu has the best running shorts.  Period.  I like my Garmin, but maybe the Nike is good too.

Glass of Water is my new fave Coldplay running song.

Supermassive Black Hole is on my favourites for running list too!
I'd give you more but Itunes is being an asshole right now and going on about quicktime and uninstalling and reinstalling and I just couldn't be bothered at this particular moment. But I know there's some Evanescence in there, haha. Two or three from thier first CD. I could sing them to you but I'm not remembering names.

I should try the lulu pants. I have a lulu bra, and I don't know which one, but for my C self it straps me down well enough that I don't think about my boobs once when running. Over that I put either a lulu top or a top from Old Navy. I have yet to find happy pants yet. The only thing is that I'm still in a stage of fitness where my shape is changing a lot so I don't think I'm ready to invest in the $$ pants yet... sigh. It would be nice to find pants I didn't have to hike up though. Right now I'm just cranking the drawstring of my Roots pants tighter and tighter. My DH is starting to make fun of me but whatever, dude, they stay on.

I like Kanye for running too - Stronger and Golddigger.  Flo Rida's Sugar and Low are good, plus JT and Shakira.  I also like to run to Black Eyed Peas.  They bug me on the radio but I put Boom Boom Pow at the beginning of the mix (and do dorky fist pumps to the "Boom! Boom!") and then I Gotta Feeling in the middle for a pick-me-up.

I love Muse. Loooove them. "Far Away" is a great song.
My workout playlist is varied and shameful. Oh so shameful.
Arctic Monkeys "Dancing Shoes"
Xavier Rudd "Energy Song" and "This World as We Know It"
Hot Chip "One Pure Thought"
Lady Gaga (shaaaame) "Poker Face"
Chester French "She Loves Everybody"
The Killers "Joy Ride" and "Somebody Told Me" and "For Reasons Unknown"
Journey "Don't Stop Believin'"
Michael Jackson "Billie Jean" and "Smooth Criminal"
Big Wreck "Ladylike"
David Usher "Airplanes"
Phoenix "Lisztomania"
Metric "Help I'm Alive"
The Fratellis "Henrietta"
Razorlight "Monster Boots"
TV on the Radio "Wolf Like Me"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Heads Will Roll"

Those Sony ear buds are what I just used on Sunday for my first 10k!  Different strokes, different ears, etc.
I agree with old school Michael Jackson, Billie Jean gets me going! I don't like Kanye, but I love his music, Stronger is one of the best to help me push through.
I've heard the Nike Plus battery dies quickly and you have to buy a new one.  Have you had this experience?
For long runs, I like to take a pack of Jelly Belly Sport beans.  They are great for when I get a dry mouth (from all the mouth breathing!) and that way I don't have to carry a water bottle.

Hey K- Just FYI,when I've  tried to access this site the last couple of times (today and yesterday), I get a message that its trying to install some sort of virus or something.. Its my antivirus that's alerting me, and when I deny the access to the file, I can get on the site no problem.  Not sure if this is a weird complication re: my computer, but thought you'd at least want to check it out... - Sharon

An audiobook!  Sounds strange, I know, but I get swept away with the story and taken out of my body in a way that music doesn't do for me.

I am trying to get back in to running and have been craving some new music - thanks!  now if only my knees would cooperate...

I've just replaced the shoe part of my nike plus due to the battery dying in my old one - BUT it was 2 years old, you only have to replace that part, not both parts and given how much I love it I'm more than happy with that replacement rate.
Also totally agree that it almost seems as if it didn't count if it wasn't tracked!

I am also getting obsessive about running music and want to recommend:

1. Not the Fall that Hurts - the Ceasars (although it's my perfect BPM pace so it might not be yours)
2. Baby Fratelli - the Fratellis
3. Common People - Pulp

They're on my current mix and I love it when they come around.

ALSO! I am similarly obsessed with my earbuds, which admittedly are sort of expensive (they were my birthday gift from Stuart two years ago) but my Sennheisen literally never fall out of my head when I'm running.

And I also love Nike +, even though I don't have Nike shoes - I bought a little soft plastic case that affixes the sensor to my laces and wear the sportband. It's incredibly motivating, and it helps me improve my pace.

My current favorites for running are Take Me on the Floor and Untouched by The Veronicas, Love at First Sight by Kylie Minogue and Please Don't Stop the Music by Rihanna.  All cheesy pop but I love it when these songs come around on my ipod!

Hillary, I think Razorlight Monster Boots is my favourite new mix song.  These are all super wicked, thank you guys.  I've got an extra hour on my run mix and it really makes all the difference.

Which running shorts by Luulemon do you recommend?

Mary

10/29/2009 11:21:07 PM #

Mary, I have them folded in my closet now till next summer but my fave is the Groovy Run Short.  Breathable, super flattering, comfortable and with a little pocket for your house key, or credit card or whatever (I always run with a credit card in case I am found dead in the woods, they can ID me, morbid but true)

Here's the link: shop.lululemon.com/.../1634.html

They're expensive, and worth it.

My husband and I have these Road IDs - reflective bracelets with personal info engraved on them.  He runs at night, so I'm always afraid some car will hit him and they won't know how to get in touch with me.  I run early in the mornings and am more worried about keeling over from exhaustion and not being able to crawl home.  They're very light and you don't even know they're there - and no credit card to carry!

I love lululemon! At almost 6'2" I own practically the entire line of pants and capris. I love their tanks, jackets and especially their underwear. Seriously the best underwear ever.  I love the sports bras too, I have a couple and they are great for my D cups.

I have seriously tiny ears and no ear buds have worked for me yet, I am going to track some of those down and try them out.

On a side note, I just wanted to say thank you to you and Corey for creating this website. I love the concept and how honest and down to earth it is.  It's nice just hearing what everyone else does and what works for them.

Thanks for the everyones comments Smile  It is all of you that are going to help make the site a success.  I can not wait to connect with you all on the site.... as I think I can learn a lot.  I have been doing the same routine for the most part off and on.  When I say off and on... it is really because my life fell apart for a few years.  So getting back involved in fitness and having this project to work on has really gave me something to aspire towards.  Exercising now needs to be shaken up for me... (I get bored of my little routine), and since Kristin and I have: a) Started working out together.  b) switched up the routine. c) started to do some groupie things like boot camp.  Things have settled back into a "fun" mode.

Kristin, what are you thoughts about "barefoot running"?  Have you ever done it?  Have you ever used those crazy Vibram 5 Finger Shoes?  Just curious... I'm a little obsessed with the idea at the moment! Smile

I'm Mom to a four-year old goggle enthusiast, girlfriend to a fitness-obsessed software geek, and reluctant lover of Kozy Shack rice pudding.  I hate to run, but I do it with a vengeance because it feels so good when it's done and I curse Jillian Michaels under my breath but I credit her with visible shoulder muscles for the first time in my life.  I'm replacing Doritos with carrots and hummous, and I finally understand that my muffin top was related to my inhalation of too many muffins.  In this blog I'll talk about my fledlgling journey: from suburban fatskinny to strong and fit via yoga, adventure sports, running, the gym and boot camp.  I'm stoked to have you along for the ride.
