Welcome to Aqufit

by Corey A. 29. October 2009 10:11

I'm Corey. Some of you may "know" me through Kristin and some of you are friends and some of you have landed here by googling random questions.  I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and some of the technology behind Aqufit, and why I'm thinking this site might be a pretty cool thing.

I've specifically chosen fitness as the centrepiece to my work because it's helped me to overcome problems and help establish balance (or something close to it) in my life.

Exercise is not something that comes naturally to everyone - or even most people.  I've learned a lot in my journey over the past few years - through experience with personal trainers, hours spent in gym and in observation, and in experimenting with different diets, supplements, and regimens.  I want to take some of that knowledge and share it here: the stuff that's worked for me.  At the same time, I'm looking forward to improving everyday by learning stuff from you, too.  This site is here to provide encouragement, social cheering, and the feedback required to help morph your fitness regimen into something that makes you feel and look awesome, everyday.

One thing that's always perplexed me about fitness is the crazy diversity of information about what you "should" be doing in order to achieve your goals.  But I don't think it's that simple: there is no one solution that fits everyone.  This site is geared to help you find your solution.  By remaining neutral and allowing you to connect with friends, inspiring people, and fitness experts, we can help you to take a glimpse into the exercise routines of others, and take away the chunks that work for you.  We want to foster community, motivation, and fun.

We've been doing a lot of research on fitness oriented web sites - and in all honesty: there seems to be pieces missing from all of them.  Our site will be cleaner and simpler - a cleamn interface where you can create, track and organize your exercise and nutrition lifestyle.  And, the site will always be totally free.

I love playing with the newest technology, and have been experimenting for months now with different ideas and technology that will make the site fun, interactive, and useful.  Aqufit will have a social networking aspect with a fitness spin and, if you have no idea where to start, the site will give you tools to find people that do: and to secretly watch how they're doing it.

You can set competitive goals with yourself, and be alerted when certain friends log workout - perhaps giving you that extra push you need.  We'll also provide a rich set of analuytic tools that will allow you to display your success along the way - if you want.  The site will allow your profile to be as public or private as you want, so you don't have to share results unless you want to.  We're working on iPhone and android mobile apps too, allowing you to log your progress on the go.

Thanks to all of you who have participated here - through sign-ups, comments, or beta test willingness.  Is there anything specific you'd like to see added?  I'd love to hear from you.

Interesting. I will definitely check out what you've written here. I've only just begun calling myself an "athlete" for a little over a year. Part of me still giggles when I hear it. It is still so new!!

I have completed 3 triathlons this year and would like to do more. I am wanting to increase my upper body strength since my lower body is pretty strong from running/cycling. I would love to stay balanced and strong as I am turning 40 in a few months. I want to be like the 80-something year old woman who competed in one of my triathlons this year. I want to be strong and healthy like that too!

Thanks for starting this. I look forward to reading more.

Corey. I love running. It's all I want to do. But it doesn't matter how long or how far I run, I still have this big sloppy belly. 50 miles a week? Big sloppy belly. I don't want to ride a bike, swim, lift weights, or eat right. I think I should be able to run like crazy and not have a big sloppy belly. It makes me hate God.

Glad to finally hear from you Corey!!....I wonder if your site could have a specific area for Q@A. I have some questions and just don't know if a comment at the end of a post is the place to do this. Would also love to hear some more background on you(aside from what has been gleaned from being an avid fan of Kristin's blog)....maybe that is to come. Anyways, love this site so far!!!....and on a personal note you and Kristin are too freaking adorable!!!

  Hi Corey,

I'm interested in reading about the specifics of your diet, portion sizes, supplements, and exercise routines. I hate to exercise, yet I love how I look & feel when I do it on a consistent basis.

Also, tips for getting motivated, and staying motivated would help me. A lot.

I also think you & Kristin are a great looking couple.

I'm excited about the future of this website and can't wait to see it's growth.  I've recently moved across country and in the process, lost my entire routine for working out.  Back before we moved, I was "training" for a Spring Triathlon.  I'm such a beginner.  I don't want to lose steam but I think it might be difficult for me to reach my goal on my own.  I'd love to find someone in my area, who's motived and at or around my same fitness level.  It would be great if this site could eventually facilitate that.

Thank you for all the comments.  I will try to keep up with them as best I can.
T: 3 Triathons Wow!  Kristin and I have toyed with the idea of doing a Triathlon... but the prospect is still a little scary to us both.  I would be interested in knowing what your training routine consists of.  This is something that I want the site to be able to track and capture is a persons full routine.  Would you be interested in sharing your current routine?  It would help serve as one good template to verify the inputs I need to capture.

BHJ: I am sorry about the big sloppy belly.  But it sounds like if we channel all that anger you have for God... we can do something about it Smile

beach: Thank you for the comments Smile My story will be part of the roll-out, stay tuned!  The site will really function as one big QA in it completed form.  Here is the idea.  Lets say "T" from above inputs her training routine and I input mine as well as my diet.  You could view sections of our profile that we allow.. choosing to take portions of our exercise or diet for your own consumption.  After working a variation of that became your "own" routine we hope that you would regularly record the results back into the site... and assuming you were comfortable with (through profile security settings) let other people browse what you have learned, taking portions that they think might best work for them.

This might not entirely suffice to answer your question. You may still need a form in which to ask specific questions.  We are hoping to attract a lot of personal trainers and fitness gurus to the site, as it will be a good way to interact with their clients.  Trainers will go through a slightly different sign up process then the public. We'll be able to leverage their expertise to provide high quality answers to various questions.

In the mean time, send any questions you have direct:
corey (at) aqufit.com
kristin (at) aqufit.com

We'll answer them.

Lisa: I will make this the topic of my next post.  I will try to have it up for Monday.  Thanks for giving me the next topic ... and for being sweet to Kristin and I ;)

Elisabeth: This is interesting because the dev team here talked about how you would find the profiles that interest you and are public enough that you could get information off them.  We came up with a twitter-like "follow" system, with some subtle differences.  These people would be people that "inspire".  When you search for "inspiration" on the site, it identifies Aqufit users of similar height and fitness level.  We had discussed the idea of adding a checkbox that also applied "similar region", so users could fine like-minded people in their own area.   Although we were not sure how many people would use this feature.  It looks to be of some use Smile and will be included in the V1 roll out.  Thanks.
